The Student Intellectual Property Law Association is hosting a speaking event, “Future of Business Method Patents” 5 to 6 p.m. today at Thomas M. Cooley Law School Auburn Hills Campus, 2630 Featherstone, room 145 in Auburn Hills. The discussion is in response to the U.S. Supreme Court issued decision in the Bilski v. Kappos case, concerning the patentability of methods for hedging risk in commodity markets. Although the Court ruled that the claimed invention was not eligible for patenting, because it was merely an “abstract idea,” the court left undecided the exact test to be applied in future cases. The event is free and open to the public.
Brian Kelly joins law firm
Maddin, Hauser, Wartell, Roth & Heller, P.C., a Southfield-based law firm, has named Brian C. Kelly of Troy as a senior associate. He practices in the firm’s Defense Practice and Insurance Coverage Group, specializing in Professional Liability Defense and Insurance Coverage. Prior to joining Maddin Hauser, Kelly was a partner at Bush Seyferth & Paige PLLC in Troy. He also practiced at Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn in Detroit and at Tressler Soderstrom Maloney & Priess in Chicago.

The first students of the Bank of America-sponsored Better Job Opportunities class at the David B. Hermelin ORT Resource Center in West Bloomfield Township have graduated. A $15,000 grant from the Bank of America Foundation underwrote the 12-week class in Microsoft Office Suite. Unemployed or under-employed residents of the metro Detroit area can apply for limited spots in future classes. Eligibility is based on need. Students attend two three-hour sessions per week for 12 weeks. Topics include basic computing, Internet, e-mail, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Microsoft Powerpoint and web page design. All classes are open to out-of-work or underemployed individuals referred by Michigan Works and Jewish Vocational Service. Classes are also available for individuals who can pay to for classes.
