TiE Detroit presents TiE20 Midwest startup awards

The Detroit chapter of TiE, also known as Talent, Ideas, Enterprise presents its annual TiE Midwest: Business Karma 3.0, 10 a.m.-8:30 p.m. Oct. 28 and 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Oct. 29 at The Henry Hotel, 300 Town Center Drive, Dearborn.
TiECon 2010 Midwest features various activities throughout the two-day event; including Extreme Power Connect; multiple sessions based on a mixture of content areas including technology, healthcare and emerging businesses; TiE 20 awards, keynote speakers from numerous organizations and the annual Business Plan Competition. Keynote speakers include: Sandy K. Baruah, president and CEO of the Detroit Regional Chamber and Gururaj “Desh” Deshpande is the chairman of Sparta Group LLC. State Sen. Alan Sanborn named Guardian of Small Business

State Senator Alan Sanborn, R-Richmond Township, was recognized as a Guardian of Small Business by the National Federation of Independent Business for his record of small business support. According to the federation’s 2009-2010 Session Small Business Voting Record, Sanborn scored 100 percent, a perfect small business score.
The voting record is based on a series of votes on issues deemed important to small businesses, ranging from tax and budget to regulatory and labor legislation.

Social media workshop offered

A Facebook, Twitter, and Skype workshop is 8-9:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, at Waterford Township Library, 5168 Civic Center Drive, Waterford Township. The cost is $10 per person.

Cooley Law School adds Lisa DeMoss to insurance law program

Cooley Law School has hired attorney and health-care consultant Lisa DeMoss, of Rochester to lead its new Master of Laws in Insurance Law program at the school’s Lansing campus.
The program, which begins in January 2011, is part of a partnership program with Olivet College. DeMoss will serve as director of the Graduate Insurance Program and as a visiting professor. Previously, she served as senior vice president, general counsel, and corporate compliance officer for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan in Detroit.
