Rob Gifford joins National Restaurant Association
The Michigan Restaurant Association announced that longtime president and chief executive officer Rob Gifford is leaving to accept a position at the National Restaurant Association. He will become executive vice president of political advocacy at the national association. Michigan Restaurant Association Chairman Matt Durack has named Penny Papantonopoulos as interim chief executive officer and formed a search committee to select a permanent president and CEO.

Mr. Rooter Corp. ranks 122 in Entrepreneur’s Franchise 500
Entrepreneur Magazine included Mr. Rooter Corp., which has a franchise in Detroit, in its “Franchise 500” listing for 2011. The plumbing company moved up 25 slots from last year and sits now at 122. Mr. Rooter also ranks 32 in “Top Home Based Franchises” and No. 103 in America’s Top Global Franchises “Top Global Franchises.”

HAP names Derick Adams to VP-human resources
West Bloomfield Township resident Derick Adams was named Health Alliance Plan vice president, human resources. Adams is a governor’s appointee to the Council for Labor and Economic Growth. Adams joins HAP from Amerisure Mutual Insurance Company in Farmington Hills, Michigan where he served the same role.

American Express workers honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Sarah Dettloff of Roseville was one of more than 150 American Express employees, students and community members who honored Martin Luther King Jr. by spending the day at Cody High School in Detroit. Dettloff helped paint one of the murals that will be installed in the school. Walls were painted, classrooms were cleaned and volunteers also created welcome kits for Freedom House Detroit, a temporary home for survivors of persecution from around the world seeking legal shelter.
