Business owners and entrepreneurs are invited to attend seminars in July offered by the Oakland County Business Center. All classes are held at the Oakland County Executive Office Building Conference Center, 2100 Pontiac Lake Road. The Pre-Business Research workshop is offered 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Thursday, July 8. It is free, but registration is required. The Fundamentals of Starting a Business workshop is offered 9 a.m.-noon Thursday, July 15, with a $30 fee. The Legal and Financial Basics for Small Business workshop is offered 9 a.m.-noon Tuesday, July 20. It is free, but pre-registration is required. Fundamentals of Writing a Business Plan is offered 9 a.m.-noon Thursday, July 22. The fee is $40, which includes all materials. Sales II: Is Following Up Your Best Sales Strategy? is offered 9 a.m.-noon Wednesday, July 28, with a $45 fee. Fundamentals of Marketing Your Business is offered 9 a.m.-noon Thursday, July 29, with a $40 fee.
Local PBS program wins Emmy Award
“Due Process,” a long-running weekly legal program airing on PBS, has won an Emmy Award for best Public/Current/Community Affairs program for its “Treatment Court” episode. The award was announced at the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences 2010 Michigan Emmy Awards at the Royal Oak Music Theatre.
The show is hosted by Birmingham attorney Henry Baskin and produced by Mitch Jacobs of Jacobs Productions. It is a weekly half-hour program that features leading attorneys, noted experts and prominent public figures brought together to provide viewers simple and helpful information about common legal issues and processes in its 26th season.
Staples teams with You-Shred
Local Staples stores are debuting commercial strength cross-cut document shredders for public use for identity theft prevention. The cash-operated You-Shred machines are a low-cost alternative to home shredders. The machines have been placed in 12 Staples locations throughout the metro Detroit. Business partners, Jeff Beard and Tom Stutting of Chandler, Arizona, are the owners of the new self-service document shredding kiosk business.
For a few dollars, several pounds of paper can be destroyed in minutes. The shredders cross-cut paper, making it unreadable for would-be thieves. The machines also shred credit cards, DVDs, CDs and staples (no need to separate pages), is jam-resistant, does not overheat and automatically bags shredded confetti for recycling.
