Small Business Association seeks nominations

The U.S. Small Business Administration’s Michigan District Office is seeking nominations for its 2011 Small Business Awards, including the Michigan Small Business Person of the Year. Nominators submit a one-page nomination letter, in any format, to the SBA District Office by Nov. 1. Those who advance to the final selection stage will be asked to submit a more comprehensive nomination packet. “These awards help showcase Michigan’s small businesses, which are more important than ever in this time of economic uncertainty,” said Richard Temkin, Michigan District director. Award winners will be honored at the 7th annual Michigan Celebrates Small Business awards event to be held on April 28, 2011. Nominations will be accepted for numerous categories. Independent Bank has new mortgage officer

Robert McCarthy has joined Independent Bank as a senior mortgage loan officer at the Shelby Township banking office. He will also be responsible for the Bloomfield and Beverly Hills offices, assisting customers with their mortgage needs in Macomb, Oakland, Monroe, St. Clair Washtenaw and Wayne counties.

Charter One names new director

Melissa Overton has assumed the role of director of community investment at Charter One and is responsible for managing the bank’s Community Investment program in Michigan. She will work in the Southfield office. Prior to joining Charter One, she was a CRA affiliate manager at Fifth Third Bank Eastern Michigan.

Hertz Schram names new partner

The law firm Hertz Schram PC of Bloomfield Hills has hired Christopher H. Tovar as a partner in its securities law practice. Along with firm founder Bradley J. Schram, and partners Robert Geller and Lisa Kavalhuna, Tovar will lead Hertz Schram’s Securities Team in offering litigation and arbitration defense, as well as regulatory compliance, firm risk management and transactional support. Tovar was formerly General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer to Investment Professionals Inc., a San Antonio, Texas-based brokerage and investment advisory firm. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School.

Wal-Mart surprises teachers

The Wal-Mart Super Center of Chesterfield Township surprised 11 teachers at Green Elementary School in Chesterfield Township with teacher appreciation gift certificates and bouquets of flowers. Michaela Causley, a resource room teacher, received a $250 gift certificate that she plans to use to purchase educational board games for the kindergarten through fifth-grade students she supports. The others received $100 gift certificates that will be used to purchase headphones for books on tape and other school supplies.

Kelly Services of Troy is the only Michigan-based company to be named to the top 10 “Military Spouse Friendly Employers.” Kelly was chosen for its efforts and success in recruiting military spouses and for offering both traditional and non-traditional perks for its employees through its employee portal, www.myKelly.com.
